Finding a Place in The Courier

The offering of baccalaureate courses at the former Panay State Polytechnic College in Poblacion, Mambusao, Capiz started in 1999. This resulted to the increase in population which was only composed before of the Agri-Science high school students. As the school grew, students also became more active and productive in terms of school activities, both inside and outside the school. Many organizations had also been founded where students’ participation was overwhelming. They participated in these organizations for camaraderie and for developing their talents and skills. And this school year, the school has reached its highest enrollment so far and it is expected that new students will be looking for a group where they fit so that they will feel “at home” while away from their homes.

Students at Capiz State University (present name of Panay State Polytechnic College), Poblacion Mambusao Campus have diverse talents and skills. These are inborn or must have been developed. The different school activities provide venue for discovering and enhancing the potentials of these students. Because of this diversity in talents among these students, the need to put up different organizations and extra-curricular activities becomes a major concern for the administration, faculty and students. They believe that developing the potentials of these students should not be confined only within the four walls of the classroom. They have also abilities and skills that cannot be ascertained through classroom instruction.

CapSU Poblacion always hopes to provide its students their needs not only for quality education but also for a friendly and caring environment- a place where they are not discriminated. Sometimes to feel intimidated is inevitable in the classroom. Less competent students are hesitant to interact with classmates who excel academically. But this is not a serious problem among CapSU students. If they feel uncomfortable to mingle with their classmates, they can find a group where they can relate with other individuals. With the existence of different student organizations in the campus, students can be assured that they will enjoy their stay in their “home away from home.”

Presently, several organizations are registered at the Office of the Student Services. Among these are the Kalingawan Performing Arts Group, TINGOG Society, Junior Politicians, and Linguists’ Society. In addition to these are the various fraternities and sororities. Each school year, these organizations are gaining new members especially with the coming of the freshmen. Students believe that these organizations can provide them opportunities to develop their total well-being. The acceptance they receive from these organizations give them self-confidence and a pleasant experience while they are in school. Truly, no one is out-of-place at CapSU Poblacion.

Students who have passion for writing are also recognized as talented individuals. Through the years, new breed of writers have been discovered at CapSU Poblacion and this is the reason why a student publication exists in the campus. Combining the prolific minds of the former PSPC Agri-Science high school students and the college students, The Courier sprouted. It was founded by its first adviser, Prof. Freden S. Delgado. The first editor-in-chief was Mr. Paolo Bayabos, a former PSPC Agri-Science student and a very promising student writer. The birth of the official student publication in the school year 2003-2004 has provided the students a venue for them to enhance their writing skills. The Courier has become an outlet for the hidden thoughts and emotions of the young writers in school. The pages of The Courier have also been a wall for promoting the school through articles about school activities, personalities, and achievements. Through the student publication, students are able to exercise their freedom of speech and expression, adhering to the journalist’s code of ethics.

This school year, The Courier goes online. It is hoped that through the Internet alumni and former students can have the chance to “visit” their Alma Mater and find out what’s new at CapSU Poblacion. The Courier Online will give them an update on activities taking place in the campus. Through reading the articles published in this blog, may former members of the school find a way to be “home” for a while and reminisce the days when PSPC or CapSU Poblacion provided them shelter for some years in their life.
