The Courier’s adviser, associate editor attend PIA journalism seminar-workshops

     The Courier’s adviser, Prof. Freden S. Delgado and Reymil O. Obligar, associate editor, attended the Basic Journalism Seminar-Workshops for publication advisers and student writers last August 8-10, 2011 at Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City.

     This 3-day seminar-workshop was organized by the Philippine Information Agency VI (Western Visayas) in partnership with SMART Communications. It aimed to equip the participants with skills and knowledge in journalistic writing in its broader as well as specific aspects: news, feature and opinion articles; to equip the participants with basic skills and knowledge in the practice of photojournalism and those related with journalistic skills, namely: copy editing, headlining, page designing; and to acquaint the participants with on-line journalism, including web writing and blogging, through the SMART’s JOURN.PH platform.

     Several topics were discussed and series of writing workshops were conducted. In the morning of day one, the lectures were about Development Communication and Reform Agenda of the Aquino Administration, and Campus Journalism Overview and Ethical Considerations. Both topics were discussed by Ms. Elsa S. Subong, PIA training In-Charge. In the afternoon, three topics were tackled: Writing in Filipino by Ms. Gemmalyn Medroso, a faculty member of Iloilo National High school; News Writing and Feature Writing by Ms. Hazel Villa, a freelance English teacher and journalist contributing to a national daily and various magazines, and an international fellow of the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program. After the lectures, the participants had a workshop on news and feature writing.

     On the second day, a lecture on Opinion Articles was given by Mr. Francis Allan Angelo, a journalist writing in a local daily. The next topic was Overview of Online Campus Journalism Program discussed by a representative of SMART Communications. On the other hand, Mr. Christopher C. Lorenzo of NetLearn Ventures, Inc. shared his knowledge about Writing for the Web. Two lectures given in the afternoon were on Sports Writing by Engr. Herman Lagon, Ph.D., a faculty member of Ateneo de Iloilo and a sports writer in a local daily; and Cyberlaws by Atty. Al Parreno. Journ.ph lecture and hands-on then followed.

     The third day of the seminar-workshop was loaded with different lectures and workshops. Prof. Allen V. del Carmen, a faculty member of the Department of Communication, University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City talked on Wall News and Newsletter, Editing and Headlining, and Page Design. In the afternoon, there were workshops on editing, headlining, photojournalism, and page design.

     After the three-day seminar-workshops, several participants were given recognition as promising writers. The Courier’s associate editor, Mr. Reymil O. Obligar, was among the Promising in Copy Editing both in English and Filipino.

     Before the training closed, Ms. Subong made announcement regarding the upcoming College Press Conference. She gave the guidelines on the contest on wall newspaper, newsletter, and magazine. Communications will be sent to the different publications for the details of the said activity./
