Before the opening of classes on August 5, the faculty and staff of CapSU Mambusao Satellite College took measures to control if not totally get rid of mosquitoes which could be carriers of dengue virus by supporting the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Mambusao in all its efforts against dengue.
According to reports, Western Visayas recorded the biggest number of dengue cases in the Philippines and the province of Capiz ranked third in the region.
According to the Office of the Municipal Mayor, more than 100 dengue cases in the municipality were already reported from January to July 2019.
In Mambusao District Hospital, many patients, children and adults, were confined due to dengue. Deaths were also recorded among those who sought consultation only when their condition got serious.
In order to mitigate the widespread negative effects of dengue, the LGU conducted activities for this purpose. Among these are misting and clean-up drive.
The Rural Health Unit (RHU) was directed by the office of Hon. Leodegario A. Labao Jr., municipal mayor, to conduct misting operations.
The RHU provided the misting machine and insecticide needed in the operation. Misting machine is used to spray pesticides in a fine mist to kill mosquitoes and other insect pests.
Misting operation was conducted in the campus in the afternoon of July 30.
All classrooms, offices and other areas where mosquitoes could possibly be hiding were being sprayed with the misting solution.
Plants and canals where mosquitoes usually breed were also applied with chemicals.
The following day, July 31, the campus also joined in the synchronized Barangay Clean-up Drive.
During this activity, participants were encouraged to search and destroy breeding places of mosquitoes like canals, gutters, cans and bottles, clear vegetation, and dispose garbage.
