AB Dep’t celebrates 8th Arts Day; ‘gods and goddesses’ descend

Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL) cosplayers portrayed the gods and goddesses of Greek and Roman mythology.
Eleven BAEL students clad themselves with costumes of gods and goddesses as they completed in the cosplay competition, highlighting the celebration of 8th Arts Day, Feb. 21.
This year’s celebration was anchored on the theme of the National Arts Month, “Ani ng Sining: Philippine Festivals.”
In his inspirational message during the opening program, Dr. Adelfo Z. Virtudazo, satellite college director, gave the students some insights about the theme.
According to Virtudazo, “ani” means harvest or fruits. The celebration of the National Arts Month centers on Philippine festivals which are fruits of arts.
Mr. Danny L. Navarra, tourism officer designate of the municipality of Mambusao, graced the occasion as keynote speaker.
Navarra expressed his delight because the Campus takes part in the celebration of the National Arts Month through Arts Day celebration. He was also contemplating of celebrating the Arts Month in the municipality of Mambusao in the coming years.
To give the audience some background on National Arts Month, he mentioned that under Proclamation No. 683, s. 1991 the month of February of every year was declared National Arts Month.
Navarra also mentioned that the municipality is developing some sites as possible tourist destinations. Among these are the Kipot Cave in Burias, Mambusao, Capiz; the Coconut Breeding Trial Unit (CBTU) also in Burias which has the biggest collection of coconut germplasm in the world; Agkawayan Road; and the Mambusao Dam in Sinondojan. He also cited Saint Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church as an attraction in Mambusao because of its new retablo.

The showcase of talents from the BAEL students opened up with a unity dance where all students, faculty, employees, administrators and guest all joined.
Aside from the cosplay, seven participants also competed in the spoken poetry. They impressed the listeners with their ability to express their emotions though poems which they themselves wrote and delivered.
After the contests, BAEL students entertained the audience with their presentation of folk dances and OPM songs.

In the afternoon, students attended a seminar. Titled “Journey to BPO World,” the seminar provided the students some insights about call centers.
As resource speaker, Mr. Lyndon L. Estocada, AB Political Science alumnus, shared his knowledge and experiences working in the business process outsourcing (BPO).
After the seminar, the results of the contests were announced. Keith Anthony Linan won in spoken poetry while Sharlene Mhay Velado in cosplay.
