The Supreme Student Council conducted leadership training among student leaders of CAPSU Mambusao with the theme, “Leader's Digest: Transforming the Youth through Innovative Leadership Training—Series 1,” at the CAPSU MSC library, Nov. 29.
The seminar aims to equip the student leaders with the knowledge and skills they need in order to effectively run their organizations.
The participants included selected officers from the Supreme Student Council (SSC), Future Leaders of the Philippines (FLP), Kalingawan Performing Arts Group (KalPAG), Society of Arts Students (SocArtS), Computer Science Society (CSS), Philippine Association of Food Technologists Students Chapter (PAFT-RHO), Office Administration Society (OAS), Braveheart Sports Club, Society of Mental Health Advocates (SOCHMA), AWANA Youth Ministry, DRRM H.E.L.P.E.R, Student Crime Prevention Committee (SCPC) and Preferential Option for Welfare, Development, and Inclusivity (PWEDI). The governors and vice-governors of the four departments also attended the training.
The training kicked off with the opening remarks Satellite College Director Dr. Adelfo Z. Virtudazo.
He encouraged the participants to use the internet as a tool to gather information beyond the lectures of the speakers.
“You try to dig deeper again; say, for example, that you do not just rely on what you have learned from here. Open the internet," he stated.
Dr. Virtudazo also shared his experiences as a member of various student organizations during college and cited them as the reason why his communication skills has improved. He also pointed out to the students that being an officer is a chance for them to also hone their own skills.
He added, “Kung wala ako nag-join, siguro wala nag-improve ang akong communication skills, both in written and oral communication. So that's why it's a big opportunity that you join the organization and act as officers.”
The first lecture commenced with Prof. Michelle L. Espartero, student organization and activities coordinator, who discussed student organizations requirements.
In her lecture, she stressed the importance of the submission of the requirements. Non-compliance will result in the disqualification of a student organization.
Meanwhile, the second speaker, Prof. Felyn Mae G. Yap, talked about ways to manage effective meetings. She stated that a meeting should not be evaluated based on its length but rather on how productive the outcomes are.
To test how well the participants understood the discussion, they were divided into four groups. Every group was assigned to act out a student organization's meeting that utilizes the steps in a parliamentary procedure.
During the afternoon session, the last speaker, Prof. Freden S. Delgado, FLP and The Courier Publication adviser, taught the participants how to make resolutions.
He enlightened the participants of the parts that constitute a resolution, and he also showed off real examples so that they would be able to comprehend it.
Using the same groupings, Prof. Delgado instructed them to make their own resolutions based on the different situations that he provided. Once they were done, the resolutions were evaluated for corrections and further improvements.
After the lectures, Chloe Lozada and Renabeth Legaspi, secretary of AWANA Youth Ministry and president of OAS, respectively, gave their impressions of the training.
Lozada said that being able to function as a team really makes a big difference.
“The most valuable and impactful thing I learned during the training was about effective teamwork. It has equipped me with the skills to communicate, collaborate, and navigate challenges as a team, which will greatly enhance my ability to achieve common goals and drive successful outcomes," she highlighted.
Meanwhile, Legaspi said that the information she acquired in the training will help her in her duties as an SK official.
“Today’s training could enhance my capability to embrace responsibility and to commit to not only learning but also applying these principles in my daily leadership practices. As you can see, the practical wisdom I’ve gained from the training will assist me in relating it to social aspects since I am part of the Sangguniang Kabataan," she shared.
Concluding the event, Dr. Lalaine E. Ricardo, student affairs and services chairperson, gave her closing remarks.
She expressed her heartfelt appreciation to all of the speakers who shared their expertise in the training. She also thanked the participants for their participation and wished that the knowledge they had gained would help them become better officers and leaders in their community in the future.
