To prepare for the upcoming transformational leadership training, the Borres Youth Leadership Institute, Inc. (BYLI) conducted a training of trainers (TOT) for the Future Leaders of the Philippines (FLP) officers and advisers of Capiz State University on February 2 at the Philippine Red Cross-Capiz Chapter building.
Delegation from CAPSU Mambusao Satellite College Chapter was composed of Prof. Michelle L. Espartero, in lieu of FLP Adviser Prof. Freden S. Delgado, and FLP Chapter officers led by their president, Joan Arboleda, Mercy Llagas, Mae Anne Alipusan, Divine Grace Deodoco, and Chloe Marie Lozada.
The program formally commenced with welcome remarks from Sam David Q. Andrada, program coordinator. He highlighted the significance of participants' actions for the betterment of family, community, and country.
“Being here today is not only a sign of responding to the call of nation-building but a sign of competence and excellence, and together with the privilege to be here is a social responsibility to do right by how we live it. It is very difficult to get all young people to be on board to what we call nation building,” Andrada said.
In a lecture, Atty. Mark D. Borres, BYLI founder, emphasized leadership as an influence and the importance of self-leadership before influencing others.
“Leadership is all about influence. If we believe that we are all leaders because leadership starts within us, we have first to influence ourselves before we can influence others. Lead yourself before you can lead others,” he said.
In the second session, John B. Ituralde, Jr. discussed effective decision-making, presenting four decision-making styles and engaging participants in practical activities. He explained that making a good decision starts with making a decision to make a decision.
Kristine Joy D. Sauler, as the third speaker, shared her expertise on effective facilitation, practical tips and things to consider as one goes to the field and practice, as well as facilitating activities.
Sauler highlighted the roles of trainers in training young leaders.
“Guiding individuals. We are not there to teach, we are not there to lecture, we are not there to mentor. Our role there would be that we are representatives, we are peers, we are also one of them and as much as possible, we want them to feel that we are just in one circle,” she shared.
After the lectures, participants engaged in zone-based activities, promoting team effectiveness. The training concluded with an orientation for the upcoming leadership training to be participated by the student leaders from the secondary schools in the DepED Capiz Division and a photo opportunity at the Capiz Provincial Park.
The training dubbed as Transformational Leadership Training (TLT), emphasizing Christian values and character, is slated March 18.
The training in the Second District of Capiz will be held at the Angeles Lema Villareal Center, Mambusao, Capiz to be facilitated by FLP officers and advisers from CAPSU Burias, Mambusao, Dumarao, and Tapaz.
