The faculty and students of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) of Capiz State University-Mambusao Satellite College took a time off from classroom instruction to celebrate their 12th Computer Science Day, March 27.
The theme for this year, "AI and Beyond: Shaping Tomorrow with Technology," rang true throughout the activities of the day, demonstrating the revolutionary potential of artificial intelligence and celebrating the students' innovative culture.
This whole day activity featured the skills, talents, and expertise of BSCS students through competitions and seminars that emphasized innovation, creativity, and collaboration.
During the opening program, Satellite College Director Dr. Ramy Lloyd L. Lotilla imparted an uplifting and challenging message.
"With great power comes great responsibility. As we embrace AI technology, let us use this to uplift humanity — to make life easier, to bridge gaps, and to create solutions that serve as progress. The world needs problem solvers, thinkers, and visionaries like you," Dr. Lotilla said.
Every year, the school invites a speaker to share his or her insights or experiences and add value by bringing in unique perspectives and expertise, thereby providing an additional layer of depth to the event.
This year, Mr. Julie F. Magallanes was invited to be the guest speaker. He is an alumnus of the BSCS program of CAPSU Mambusao, now teaching ICT at Mambusao National High School.
Mr. Magallanes’s speech was an inspiring call to the students to grasp the challenges and possibilities of the present time.
He taught the audience the lesson that embracing opportunities is the key to success. He also innovatively redefined BSCS as:
Build your skill, knowledge, and future.
Strengthen your mindset, character, and determination.
Create opportunity and innovation.
Succeed in your goal, career, and life.
Thereafter, the day saw a host of interesting events aiming to expose the varied potential of the students studying computer science.
There were different competitions where students presented their innovative ventures and problem-solving capacities. The competition encouraged a sense of healthy rivalry and cooperation, enabling students to learn from one another's productions and take pride in their overall success.
The energy of the morning carried on with a Zumba competition, where students displayed their passion for fitness and camaraderie.
One of the best parts of the day was the educational seminar with Mr. Joseph J. Solidarios, the resource speaker, who gave a wealth of information on the most recent trends in AI-driven application development.
His talk covered Agentic and Generative AI, two areas that are in hot growth right now with very important implications for the future of technology.
Solidarios' experience walked students through the complexities of such advanced technologies, including Generative AI tools (ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly, Suno, Runway, and Copilot), AI agents, and prompt engineering.
The seminar's practical, experiential format enabled students to directly interact with the subject matter, testing generative AI tools and learning how to effectively leverage their potential.
One such especially impressive demonstration was creating song lyrics using Suno AI, which were subsequently employed to build a full song, highlighting the creative potential of such tools.
He urged BSCS students to venture into generative AI responsibly, with a focus on the role of ethics and privacy policies in AI use.
In the afternoon, activities included a Fashion Runway event, where students showcased their ingenuity by creating dresses and costumes using recyclable materials.
This was followed by CS Got Talent, where BSCS students showcased their varied talents, showing that they are not only adept at coding and algorithms but also at other artistic and performance-based skills like singing and dancing.
The talent show was an appropriate climax to a day that not only celebrated technological innovation but also the diverse talents and creative energy of the students.
The activity ended with the winners in different competitions being awarded, honoring students' academic excellence, esports, creative arts, and technical abilities.
