In accordance with the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 (R.A. 7079), the Student Publication Office organized a two-day campus journalism training-workshop, April 24-25.
The Courier editorial staff and representatives from four department publications attended the event.
As he presented the rationale of the training, Prof. Freden S. Delgado, The Courier adviser, emphasized the importance of conducting the training-workshop.
“The Journalism Act of 1991 or Republic Act 7079 mandates that all schools must publish paper… This same mandate becomes the anchor of this training as with the existence of our school publication,” Delgado said.
He added that the event would provide an avenue for the participants to acquire basic skills and develop competence and confidence in writing.
In addition, in her opening remarks, Officer-in-Charge Prof. Clyde Dwynelh G. Leccio, challenged the student journalists to be open to new learning and skills.
“Let this training ignite your passion for truth and creativity and inspire you to become responsible and courageous storytellers of your generation,” Leccio said.
Ms. Chantal Jade V. Tolores, public relations officer of the Sangguniang Bayan office of Kalibo, Aklan, served as the trainer for the first day.
She discussed news writing and feature writing in the morning, and tackled photojournalism and layout during the afternoon session.
After the training, participants engaged in an open forum to ask questions and seek clarifications.
This was followed by a workshop, where participants were given topics to write about.
At the end of the first day, Dr. Lalaine E. Ricardo, student affairs and services chairperson, presented the certificate of appreciation to Tolores.
Meanwhile, Mr. Philip Jayson D. Falcis, adviser of The Radiance publication, served as the trainer for the second day.
His session covered editorial writing, column writing, and sports writing in the morning, while headline writing and copyreading were discussed in the afternoon.
Open forum and workshops followed his presentations. Falcis chose three promising outputs in each category.
Satellite College Director Dr. Ramy Lloyd L. Lotilla and SAS Chairperson Dr. Ricardo awarded certificate of appreciation to Falcis.
Capping off the two-day event, Dr. Ricardo delivered the closing remarks. She expressed her hope that the skills and experiences gained from the workshop would empower the student journalists to pursue greater heights in campus journalism.
