The Red Cross Youth (RCY) Council of Capiz State University-Mambusao Satellite College conducted a Youth Volunteer Formation Course and Basic First Aid Training on October 1–2, with the theme “Establishing Youth Member for the Love of Service: Volunteerism and Leadership.”
Mr. Francis Carl A. Figarola, medical-dental services chairperson and RCY Council co-adviser, facilitated the conduct of the training which aimed to develop responsible, skilled, and service-oriented young individuals who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to their communities, especially in times of need.
Sanderlen B. Ponsaran, chapter service representative of RCY-Capiz Chapter, served as lecturer while Ma. Elyza Ciudad, a volunteer facilitator, assisted in the discussions and activities throughout the training.
Participants from the Red Cross Youth, DRRM H.E.L.P.E.R, and staff joined the two-day training to strengthen their preparedness, leadership, and emergency response capabilities. The sessions aimed to instill a sense of responsibility, volunteerism, and compassion among young leaders while equipping them with essential first aid and life-saving skills.
The activity officially opened with the welcoming remarks of Dr. Julie V. Dalida, in behalf of the Dr. Ramy Lloyd L. Lotilla, satellite college director. Dr. Dalida emphasized that being prepared saves lives—the training gives the skills to respond to emergencies, care for others, and help create a safer community.
“Being prepared for emergencies is crucial. This training will equip you with the knowledge and skills to respond to various medical emergencies, from basic first aid to more complex situations. Remember, it’s not just about responding to emergencies—it’s about empowering yourself to save lives, care for others, and build a safer community,” Dr. Dalida said.
The first day of the training, held at the Accreditation Room, focused on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic life support (BLS).
The session began with an introduction to the Seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross- humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
Participants were taught how to identify cardiac arrest and perform CPR correctly, including the proper placement of hands for chest compressions, rescue breathing techniques, and maintaining composure under pressure.
In the afternoon, trainees engaged in hands-on exercises where they demonstrated CPR on mannequins under the supervision of the trainer, assisted by the facilitator. Through repeated practice and group demonstrations, participants developed the ability to respond effectively during emergencies, emphasizing teamwork, accuracy, and prompt action.
The second day of the training, conducted at the Library, began with a lecture on first aid response and choking emergencies. Participants learned how to identify signs of choking and apply proper interventions. The lecture also discussed various types of wounds, fractures, and techniques for proper patient handling.
In the afternoon, participants took a written examination to assess their understanding of the lectures. Following the exam, they engaged in return demonstrations showcasing their skills in bandaging wounds, immobilizing fractured arms and legs, and lifting and moving patients safely and efficiently. The exercises highlighted their preparedness and confidence in applying first aid procedures in real-life situations.
Among the participants who attended the training was John Rey L. Jamero, DRRM H.E.L.P.E.R. president, who expressed his gratitude for the opportunity given to him to attend the training.
“I am thankful to have been given the chance to participate in this training. I acknowledge the opportunity to learn and develop my skills to be a good first aider,” Jamero said.
After the successful completion of the two-day training, participants reflected on their experiences. Janna C. Alfaro, one of the trainees, shared how the activity inspired her to be more service-oriented.
“I joined the Red Cross training to learn how to help others during emergencies and to be more prepared in real-life situations. It’s also a good way to gain skills, build confidence, and be ready to serve my community when needed,” Alfaro shared.
Meanwhile, Mr. Figarola emphasized the importance of such training programs in schools.
“Red Cross training is important for schools as it promotes a safer environment by teaching students and staff essential first aid and CPR, enabling immediate life-saving responses to accidents and disasters. This training builds a culture of preparedness and resilience, empowering individuals to identify hazards, prevent injuries, and provide crucial care until professional help arrives,” Figarola said.
The Youth Volunteer Formation Course and Basic First Aid Training concluded successfully, leaving the participants more equipped and motivated to uphold the Red Cross principles of service and humanitarianism. Through the efforts of the RCY Council and the dedication of the facilitators, the two-day training fostered a community of young first aiders ready to serve with compassion, courage, and commitment.
