The Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL) program spearheaded the Pag-abi-abi: A Welcome Ceremony for Mr. Sidik Ali Sofyan from Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, Indonesia, January 15.
The activity aimed to strengthen international academic ties and promote cultural exchange within the campus.
Dr. Maria Aurora G. Victoriano, Program Chair of the Bachelor of Arts in English Language, delivered the welcome remarks, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to host an international educator and emphasizing the value of global collaboration in education.
“In our culture here in Capiz, Pag-abi-abi is a heartfelt expression of hospitality, welcoming our guests with warmth, sincerity, and respect, and making them feel at home as part of the family,” Dr. Victoriano said.
Dr. Victoriano further explained that the ceremony reflects the university’s openness to intercultural dialogue and its commitment to building meaningful partnerships beyond national boundaries. She highlighted that such exchanges enrich both teaching and learning by allowing institutions to learn from diverse perspectives and practices.
“This occasion is more than just a formal welcome; it is a celebration of friendship and collaboration, and it serves as a bridge that connects our cultures and partnerships, enriching the teaching and learning experiences of both our institution and the exchange participants,” she added.
Meanwhile, an inspirational message followed from Dr. Julie V. Dalida, Officer-in-Charge, who underscored the importance of cross-cultural learning experiences in shaping globally competent students and educators.
“This activity highlights that education goes beyond textbooks and exams; it is about critical thinking, cultural exchange, and personal growth.”
Dr. Dalida expressed her hope that Sofyan would have a fruitful and meaningful stay at CAPSU Mambusao, gaining valuable teaching experience while also learning from Filipino culture and educational practices. She also encouraged students to maximize the opportunity to learn from the exchange teacher and engage actively in intercultural learning.
Adding color to the event, the Kalingawan Performing Arts Group (KALPAG) presented an intermission number, showcasing local talent and Filipino culture.
Prof. Lida L. Corcino, External Affairs and Linkages (EAL) Chair, formally introduced Sofyan to the CAPSU community.
